5 Ways To Replace Bread (and why)

Eating bread is like, so my thang! No, seriously, with every single meal, why do we feel as though we need bread? Sandwiches…bread, breakfast…bread, dinner…bread, snacks…. bread. I mean how much bread and bread products can we eat? This was the typical shopping list growing up for me: milk, bread and eggs. Everything else was centered around those three. You couldn’t be WITHOUT any one of these food items at all. If you ran out of just ONE of these items, you were doomed! Can I get an AMEN?

The issue is that the majority of breads are made from refined wheat, which is stripped of its fiber and all of the good nutrients. Most breads “say” they are made up of  “whole grains” but  usually only contain varieties of smashed up wheat.

Another issue is that a lot of people have gluten sensitivities as well as digestive issues when they consume bread or bread products. Some may not even be aware of it.

We love bread so much, but sometimes it also makes us feel tired and heavy. Don’t you just hate those days when you can’t fit into your REALLY cute skinny jeans? Mama Bear, you know what I’m talkin’ about….you feel all bloated and stuff? UGGGGH!

Many people can eat bread without any problems and some of us try to avoid it. Gratefully there are healthy alternatives to bread and bread products that you can use when preparing your meals.

I’d like to expose you to 5 simple, healthy ways any Mama Bear can replace bread: (be open-minded)

  1. Leafy Greens

Since they are the food missing the most in modern diets, leafy greens are great to use as a bread replacement. You can use lettuce, collards, or chards and make a wrap. Add, meat or sautéed veggies to it, and you have a yummy meal. Plus, greens are cooling and refreshing. They cool us off as the weather temp rises.

  1. Cauliflower

Don’t underestimate the power of the flower! Cauliflower breads and pizzas are sooo yummy and are great alternatives to use. What I really love about using cauliflower as an alternative is that it’s quick. In order to use cauliflower as an alternative, the whole cauliflower must be grated and cooked. Here’s a delish recipe for Spicy Red Cauliflower Wings. A great alternative to the breaded wings we often eat.

3) Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes make an awesome bread substitute. When cooked, you can easily add them as a substitute for a bread bun on a burger. Say What?! Yes, it’s so delicious too. How about sweet potato toast or sweet potato pancakes? There are so many options for bread alternatives with sweet potatoes.

4) Corn Tortillas

Who doesn’t love a nice, hot corn tortilla? Corn tortillas can be either made with wheat or corn and is high in fiber and gluten-free. You can make wraps, rolls, sandwiches, burgers and even a pizza. Try making a tuna wrap with corn tortillas.  Your belly will say mmmmm.

5.) Ezekiel Bread

Ezekiel bread is one of the healthiest breads available. It’s made up of several types of sprouted grains and legumes like wheat, barley, millet and spelt. This bread does contain gluten, so if you have sensitivities, this is not the right bread option for you. Did I mention Eziekiel bread has no added sugar? Just lovely!
